Paintings in Oil

abstract, oil painting, Heather Douglas
Sensei

Sensei

Sensei: Japanese
A person born before another. Used to show respect to someone who has achieved a certain level of mastery in an art form or other skill, (novelists, musicians & artists).

An abstract painting,, which started as one image, but led me in another direction.
I see a Sensei in the painting.

Noel loves this one so I guess we're keeping it!

Brooklyn Bridge Beacon

This is the second painting from that wet day in May, when I was sitting in traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge. (See the story of "Brooklyn Bridge Crossing" below.) One of the many lights seen on the bridge.

Brooklyn Bridge Crossing
Brooklyn Bridge Crossing

My daughter graduated from Pratt Institute in May 2011 and we all went into the city for her graduation ceremony. It was a wet, rainy day. After the graduation we went for a late lunch and then drove her back to her apartment in Brooklyn. By the time we headed for home it was 6 o'clock and the height of rush hour traffic. I was sitting in the back seat of the car, with my camera, shooting pictures of everyone I saw with umbrellas! The Brooklyn Bridge is amazing from any angle, but this was a particularly good situation for me: umbrellas, drizzle, sitting on the bridge looking up at the pedestrians crossing above me, in some cases faster than we were moving! I had to paint it!

Artists In The Parks Series

The "Artists In The Parks" group, in conjunction with
"Keep Rockland Beautiful",

held a fundraiser and silent auction in Nyack State Park, in November 2010.
As a member of "Artists in The Parks" I was given the opportunity to submit 5 paintings.
I didn't have 5 paintings, initially! I decided to create a series
of small 5 x 7 oils for each season in the parks.

Rockland Lake State Park is beautiful in the summer,
but equally so on this cold
January day
when the lake was frozen and covered with
fresh snow.

Middlebury Snowbowl, Vermont, ski slope, winter, woods, snow, green mountains, Heather Douglas
Snowbowl
Snowbowl

Middlebury Snowbowl was the perfect place for my young daughters to learn how to ski. Now they are adults, have switched to snowboarding, and love the challenge of black diamonds. In spite of the lure of the larger ski resorts we still return to the Snowbowl when we can, partly out of nostalgia, partly because we always have a good time, and partly because it feels like home!
This slope leads to Allen and Ross with a beautiful view of the Green Mountains in Vermont.

Rim Run
Rim Run

This is near the top of Sugarbush, in Vermont, where everything is frosted in snow for the winter. This day, when we were there, it was so cold that I would take two or three runs and go into the warming hut to thaw out my fingers and toes!

It was beautiful outside, in spite of the negative temperatures. This painting captures, for me, the landscape that is familiar to skiers and boarders every winter. It's the reason why we "pray for snow"!

Nyack Dinghies

On a warm summer day I came upon these boats tied up to a dock on the Hudson River in Nyack, NY. I am often drawn to water. It's a challenging subject but has limitless possibilities for a painter.

This painting has been accepted into:
"The Ridgewood Art Institute's 30th Juried Show", January 2010, "The VCS Gay Pride Rockland Show", June 2010, The "River Art" Juried Show, January 2011 and published in "River Art" by Sunbury Press 2011

Sunset In The Marsh

Sunset In The Marsh

The marshes, located in Piermont, NY, are a maze of waterways amongst the reeds. This area is unique and protected because of the brackish water from the Hudson river and the Atlantic Ocean. It is home to many species of birds, turtles and plants.
One late afternoon my husband and I took our kayaks down to the marsh and wound our way out to the Hudson River. The sun was setting as we returned and it was a site too lovely not to put on canvas.

This painting has been accepted in to the "VCS Gay Pride Rockland" Show, June 2010

Sparkill Dogwoods

Sparkill Dogwoods

Down the road from my home is the Rockland Cemetery. It has a long winding drive, through a grassy lawn, leading up to the entrance gates. Along this drive and visible from the street are three beautiful dogwoods. They are stunning in the spring and fall and I always look forward to seeing them as I drive back and forth on various missions!

Vezelay

Vezelay

In April of 2008 my cousin and I accompanied our mothers, who are in their 80's, on a trip through France. We were tracing the path that my grandfather took as a soldier, at the end of WWI, based on his diary. Of course we made a few detours along the way. I cannot honestly say if Vezelay was on his path or one of our detours. "Quaint" and "charming" do not even begin to descibe this beautiful little village, set high upon a hill with commanding views in every direction! First you must wander up the streets leading to the hill top and each and every step of the way is a delight to the senses.

Near Fenway

My daughter attended Boston University and in the fall of 2007 I went to visit her for a few days. On a beautiful afternoon, when she was in classes, I walked from her apartment to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, passing by this tranquil scene on my way. It would have been terrific to set up an easel and paint right then and there but since that was not possible I had to settle for the next best thing: several photographs and much time spent in the studio, later.

I'm very happy with the way the painting turned out. Getting those reflections in the water was no easy task!

This painting has been accepted into: The Putnam Arts Council's 46th Annual Juried Fine Arts Exhibit in October 2008, The Arts Expo 2009 Juried Show in March 2009, and The Hudson Valley Art Association 78th Juried Show in July 2009.

On The Way To Hendricks
On The Way To Hendricks

In the spring of 2007 I went to Minneapolis, Minnesota with my husband. We found ourselves accompanying his parents on a three hour drive from Minneapolis, across the state to Hendricks, a very small town on he border of South Dakota. I was literally just "along for the ride". Since I never travel without a camera, I shot random pictures out the
the back seat window. Low and behold several of them came out quite well and I painted this view of a Minnesota farm, reflected in the water, somewhere half way across the state.

Piermont Reeds

Piermont Reeds

In the spring of 2007 another artist friend and I took our easels and found a shady spot on the road that leads out to Piermont Pier, on the Hudson River in New York. We spent several hours painting and chatting to the people passing by. This view is looking back toward land across the reeds and an inlet. Some lucky person owns a house tucked away in the corner, overlooking the water.

This painting was accepted into the Edward Hopper House "Small Matters of Great Importance" 14th Annual Juried Show, September 2007

Hook Mountain

Hook Mountain

This is a well known site to anyone who crosses back and forth across the Hudson River, on the Tappan Zee Bridge, in New York. Several years ago someone asked if I'd ever painted Hook Mountain. I hadn't but thought it was a good idea. After trying to find a good vantage point from many spots along the shore,
I finally asked a friend to shoot the scene from the car while I drove across the bridge. She got the shot I needed.

This painting was exhibited at The Edward Hopper House for the month of January 2009 and accepted into the VCS Gay Pride Juried Art Benefit in June 2009.

Cotswold Cottage

Cotswold Cottage

In January 2006 my husband took me to London, England as a birthday present. We took a day trip to the Cotswolds, a place I'd always wanted to see. Being England things are still green, even in January! The best part was the complete absence of any tourists, excepting us, so we explored the many paths and waterways without being disturbed by anyone. It was beautiful! This Manor House is perfectly situated over the waterway which runs underneath.
